My senses are fading, Father.

I struggle to hear

the voices of grandchildren;

the dialogue on the television;

the gentle sounds of the wind;

the uplifting calls of birds;

So a hearing aid helps me to hear.

I struggle to see

the fine print of a newspaper;

the text of a book;

the photos I love to peruse;

the cricket ball on the television;

So spectacles help me to see.

As I’m ageing,

I am losing sensitivity in my senses, Father;

But let me never lose my ability

to see you at work,

and to hear your voice—

In the world,

And in my life.

Jesus told them, ‘Go back and tell John what’s going on: The blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the wretched of the earth learn that God is on their side. Is this what you were expecting? Then count yourselves most blessed!’ (Matthew 4: 4–6, MSG)
