ELDERLY

Am I elderly, Father?

The media reported an incident involving

an elderly man.

Their tone was sympathetic,

Even compassionate,

Sensitively implying that he was

vulnerable,

frail,

unable to cope with trauma,

lacking resilience.

I should have appreciated the journalist’s tone—

But the ‘elderly man’ was younger than me!

Is that how others see me, Father?

Is that how you see me?

I admit my body is weakening.

I can do most of what I always did,

But it takes longer

And hurts more!

I want to stay young in my faith—

Mature in my understanding,

But young in my willingness to serve;

Young in my ability to adapt to new situations;

Young in my confidence to speak for you,

and to share my faith with others.

Keep me young, Father.

He fills my life with good things, so that I stay young and strong like an eagle. (Psalm 103: 5, GNT)
