BONDING

We know how important bonding is, Father.

From experience

We know that this helpless,

dependent,

vulnerable life

Must bond to learn to trust;

That those closest to her

Are the world that will make her feel secure.

From research

We know that this forming,

growing,

developing life

Must bond to learn to relate;

That if she fails to attach in the first few months,

The trauma will impact her forever.

And so we hold,

caress,

talk,

sing,

Until she recognises us,

responds to our voice and touch,

anticipates our care;

Until she knows that we belong to her.

Why do I forget that it’s the same with you, Father?

From experience

I know that my helpless,

dependent,

vulnerable life

Must bond to learn to trust—you.

From your word

I know that my forming,

growing,

developing life

Must bond to learn to relate—to you.

And this bonding can only happen

As we spend time together.

Help me to never be so busy

That I neglect my time with you.

Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. (Luke 5: 15–16, NIV)
